Disney has done it again! Actually, it´s quite simple: make a great movie and put your whole story into a game. This way, you´ll get a game with personality...
Many games have been made by Disney this way. Tarzan, the Lion King and the Jungle Book are some examples. This time, it´s Atlantis´ turn. Atlantis combines fine graphics and a great gameplay to create an almost perfect platformgame. Let´s start with the graphics.
As you can see on the various screenshots, Disney has succeeded in creating the same ambiance as in the movie. Blurry backgrounds against hard foregrounds make it able for you to keep your eyes on the right spot. Secondly, the various characters in this game are smoothly animated...
On the other hand there´s the gameplay. Normally in platformgames (such as Mario Advance and Rayman), the game is a one-liner; there´s only one path, and that´s the one to the exit. Atlantis makes an end to this concept. There aren´t a lot of levels in this game, but these levels are often like a maze!
Another nice thing to mention about Atlantis, is the variety of this game. In Atlantis you don´t only have to walk and jump, but you´ll also have to crouch, swim, climb, swing, etc. Especially the swinging part is quite nice.
I said Atlantis is an almost perfect platformgame. The main con of this game is the speed. I think your character moves way too fast. Especially when jumping from one rock to another (when timing is essential), this is very annoying.
There´s no multiplaying option in this game. It would have been nice if the developers could make a platformgame in which players can help each other, but apparently they don´t think.
